Jane's boat is rammed by a fallen log, causing her to fall into the water. Surrounded by crocodiles, a black stranger named Shaka carries her ashore, and tries to revive her. However, Tarzan attacks him, errantly thinking he his hurting her. She explains that Shaka saved her life. Shaka then tells Tarzan that he was born in Gwandalla, but became a doctor in Paris. After becoming homesick, however, he is now travelling back home. Grateful for his helping Jane, Tarzan offers to guide him back to his people Upon starting the journey, a series of traps almost kill them. Tarzan, suspicious as to why a friendly tribe keeps trying to kill them, demands to know the real reason for the journey. Shaka concedes that if he is able to pass a tribal test that was set up by a hardened witch doctor, he will have proved himself worthy of his late father's title, as the chief of M'Gaasis.
