13 year old runaway, Isabella Barrett, has been captured by the police and taken back to an orphanage.Isabella decides to runaway again. Escaping durign the night, she hides in a barrel which is loade onto a boat called the Astoria. She has become a stow away, and learns while she is hiding in the hold that there is something a miss with the cargo the captain is smuggling on board.
